DSA Compliance - Additional Reporting Mechanisms

One piece of the DSA would require our team to build additional mechanisms to our ads reporting tools for users. We built out the Reporter Notice and Reporter Appeal tools, which would warn users who abuse the ad report function that they could be blocked from reporting for 24 hours, and then offer an appeal mechanism to this suspension, respectively.

Process

This project was a multi-team effort that spanned multiple departments. Studying the proposed legislation, then the final, passed DSA, the Meta Legal team identified which areas Meta was responsible for complying with and translated them into language the product teams could understand. Then, product teams turned the legal requirements into product requirements for the product surfaces we own across Meta's platforms.

Being on the Ads Transparency team, I was responsible for these additional reporting mechanisms for reporting advertisements. I found and collaborated with my organic transparency product & design counterparts, who were responsible for building the same mechanisms for reporting user generated content. Our teams were solving similar problems in different contexts, but to the end user these experiences should feel as if they're one and the same. We were able to align our experiences very well, and this was the start of a great collaborative relationship with the organic transparency team.

Throughout the process we organized regular check-ins with legal and the various product designers across different teams within Integrity in order to ensure our user flows were aligned.
